The aims of this study were to analyze the data from frequency-volume charts and discover the voiding pattern in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Materials and Methods:
We reviewed three days voiding diary of 49 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia, as well as 43 healthy men without any voiding problems. From three days voiding diary, nocturnal bladder capacity, functional bladder capacity and daytime and nocturnal urinary frequency were analyzed to assess the voiding pattern in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The cause of nocturia was evaluated.
Nocturnal bladder capacity and functional bladder capacity were decreased and daytime and nocturnal urinary frequency was increased in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia, compared with normal control groups (p<0.05). Thirty six(73.5%) of the 49 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia had 1 or more voidings per night. Of the 36 patients with nocturnal frequency, 19(52.8%) had decreased bladder capacity, 13(36.1%) had nocturnal polyuria, 3(8.3%) had mixed type and 1(2.8%) had polyuria.
Most commom cause of nocturia in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia was decreased nocturnal bladder capacity. Reporting on three days voiding diary is sufficient to gain insight into their voiding habits in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. (Korean J Uro-Oncol 2004;2:166-170)
