Published online: March 30, 2004.
Sarcomatoid transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare neoplasm with only 16 well-illustrated examples reported previously. Although sarcomatoid transitional cell carcinoma is different from carcinosarcoma, they are similar in microscopic appearance and diagnosis can be confused. Immunohistochemical study can distinguish these tumors as different diseases. It is usually associated with a poor prognosis. This report presents an additional case in which sarcomatoid transitional cell carcinoma originated from the left renal pelvis and coexisted with papillary transitional cell carcinoma in the urinary bladder with a poor prognosis.
