Non-Epithelioid Renal Angiomyolipoma with Renal Vein and Inferior Vena Cava Invasion

Tumor thrombus in renal vein or inferior vena cava is rare in patients with renal angiomyolipoma, which is a common benign neoplasm of kidney, especially without potential malignant transformation as epithelioid angiomyolipoma. A 58-year-old female who has known to have a fat containing renal mass in the right kidney, incidentally found by abdominopelvic computed tomography at 2004, was referred to the department of urology with a problem of increased size of the renal mass on computed tomography scan. In this case surgical treatment was clinically necessary due to the invasion of the renal vein and inferior vena cava. The mass and thrombi were excised successfully and the pathology results confirmed that both mass and thrombi are benign angiomyolipoma without any variant histologic differentiation. It must be concerned that vascular invasion can arise from conventional, asymptomatic, and small angiomyolipoma when the physicians decide to have conservative management with surveillance.
