Bladder cancer has a variety of natural courses, and numerous factors are related to their recurrence, progression, and survival. Because of the need for long-term and frequent follow-up, as well as the paucity of sensitive and specific noninvasive tests, bladder cancer ranks as the most bothersome condition to patients, and even urologists. None of the biomarkers reported to date have shown sufficient sensitivity and specificity for detecting the whole spectrum of bladder cancer diseases in routine clinical practice. However, recent advance in biomarker technologies, such as gene expression analysis, microarray, and epigenetic studies will provide us to identify the promising bladder cancer marker. Herein, I review the recent advance in molecular marker identification for bladder cancer. (Korean J Urol Oncol 2008;6:68-73)
